Important places and features




Some important places in Japan are Tokyo which is the capital of Japan. This city became the capital of Japan when Tokugawa Ieyasu came to this city. When Ieyasu came to the city it was called Edo and not Tokyo. Osaka is the second largest city in Japan and is the central metropolis of the Kansai region.  Hiroshima was a important city in Japan. It was where the first atomic bomb was dropped. Hiroshima became a symbol of the horrors of wars. Kyoto is a city with hundreds of temples and gardens. It was the imperial capital in 794 to 1864. Today it is the cultural center.

Japan was made up of many islands. The four main islands were Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. An important physical feature of Japan is Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is Japans tallest mountain. As well as being the tallest mountain, Mount Fuji is a sacred mountain which is worshiped in Shinto which is one of the main Japanese religions. Japan is very close to China as well. It is separated by the sea of Japan. Japan has two hundred volcanoes which are part of the ring of fire. Japan also has many hot springs due to the volcanic activities.
